The Art of Contrast: How HUNTREAY Used Chand Baori in a 300-Year-Old Cotswolds Bedroom

A JORO case study featuring HUNTREAY

There is something quietly powerful about placing refined, considered design inside a space that has stood for three centuries. It creates a conversation between eras. That tension, when handled well, is where the most memorable interiors live.

That is exactly what London-based interior design studio HUNTREAY achieved with this bedroom, set within a 300-year-old Cotswolds cottage. Rather than leaning fully into the expected rustic charm of the architecture, HUNTREAY brought something more tailored and elevated to the space, with our Chand Baori playing a central role in making it work.

About HUNTREAY

At HUNTREAY, the guiding philosophy is simple: create flow and connection by shaping how life moves between people and spaces. Their work is characterised by a precise attention to detail, an instinct for contrast, and a signature touch: a moment of black in every scheme. Not heavy-handed. Just enough to ground and complete a room.

This Cotswolds project is a perfect expression of that approach. Old bones, new thinking.

Why Chand Baori?

When it came to upholstering the bed's headboard, HUNTREAY needed a fabric that could do several things at once: introduce black into the palette with elegance and restraint, perform technically across sculptural curves and tight upholstery lines, and bring the kind of refined surface interest that pulls an entire scheme together.

Our Chand Baori, in black and linen, answered all of it.

Named after the extraordinary ancient stepwell in Rajasthan, Chand Baori is a woven design with a fine, precise repeat. Black and linen interlock in a pattern that is intricate without ever competing for attention. For a designer looking to introduce black in a considered, almost understated way, it offers exactly the right register.

Woven designs with a close repeat are a HUNTREAY staple, and it's easy to see why. On a flat wall or a simple cushion, a small pattern reads quietly. Upholstered across a sculptural headboard, wrapped around curves, pulled taut at edges, folded into tight corners, it comes alive. The pattern becomes part of the form.

What impressed most in this project was Chand Baori's technical performance. There is no visible grinning around the tight upholstery detailing, which is a genuine test of any fabric's construction quality. It maintains crisp, clean lines at every sharp edge while retaining a softness that keeps the overall mood from tipping into severity. That balance between upholstery performance and tactile elegance is not easy to achieve, and it is precisely what we designed for.

The Room Palette

The wider scheme was built through olive, linen, black, and warm antique tones. A palette that feels both considered and deeply liveable.

Soft neutral voile curtains filter the natural light, adding movement and a gentle softness that offsets the precision of the upholstery. A pair of antique Art Deco bedside cabinets introduce character and depth, bridging the centuries-old architecture with the tailored quality of the furnishings. Chand Baori in black and linen sits at the heart of it, anchoring the palette, adding pattern and depth, and providing that essential, grounding touch of black that HUNTREAY brings to every room they create.

On Craft and Considered Design

At JORO, we believe that the best fabrics serve a purpose well beyond the surface. Chand Baori is part of our wider collection of refined woven designs, developed with designers and makers in mind, where construction quality is as important as aesthetic. Every design in this collection is crafted from responsibly sourced materials, honouring both the people who make them and the spaces they ultimately inhabit.

Projects like this HUNTREAY bedroom remind us why that rigour matters. A fabric that performs across demanding upholstery work, holds its integrity at every edge, and still reads with elegance in the finished room. That is what we are always working towards.
